My Favourite Series

#SixForSunday is a prompt run by the fabulous Steph over at alittlebutalot - link here for more!

This week’s Six For Sunday sees us chatting about our favourite series - which is great for me, because I can never pick an individual book, and can’t ever narrow it down to more than a series. So, here are my all-time faves!

1. The Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness.

This is everything I love in a book series. It’s a hybrid fantasy-dystopia (some people say sci-fi and I guess it kind of is too?). The characters are compelling - both the heroes and the villains - the setting is fascinating, the world is built brilliantly… and it absolutely destroys my feels every time, even though I know what’s coming now as I’ve read it so many times. Also, it’s a masterclass in how to write a brilliant villain.

2. The Books Of Pellinor by Alison Croggon.

I am perpetually baffled that more people haven’t read these books. They’re basically a YA-friendly LOTR, and I honestly don’t understand why all fantasy nerds don’t see this series as compulsory reading. It’s got brilliant characters, gorgeously lyrical writing, epic quests and worldbuilding, fantastic friendships and relationships… these books really are home to me.

3. The Wee Free Men books by Terry Pratchett.

Tiffany goes off to rescue her brother armed with a frying pan and an army of tiny Nac Mac Feegle (blue Scottish pictsies whose favourite things are drinking and fighting). Wonderful work from Pratchett, so much so that I haven’t finished the series of Tiffany Aching books, because I always want a Tiffany book there for when I need it.

4. The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix.

This series was originally a trilogy: Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen. But Garth Nix has since added Clariel and Goldenhand to this world, so let’s just say for argument’s sake I mean all of them. The Abhorsen is the one who makes sure the dead stay dead - but when something happens to Sabriel’s father (the Abhorsen) she has to go on a mission to find him. The worldbuilding is great, and these books for me really sit at the lower end of YA and are a great segue from MG fantasy (something I think we really need more of!).

5. The Shades of Magic series by VE Schwab.

Of course this series has a mention on here! I was slightly late to the party, but once I arrived I became obsessed. A magical world, four different Londons, and the fantastic combo of magician, prince, and terrifying pirate make for one of the most compelling fantasy series I’ve read in a long time. V is a queen.

6. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman.

Heartstopper brings me such absolute joy every time I read it, and it’s no wonder that on my shelf I have the kickstarter edition, plus all the volumes published so far (and oh my goodness I need the colouring book!). it’s happy, wholesome, heartwarming, utter joyousness in book form.

Have you read any of these series?

What other series would you recommend I add to my TBR?
