Books I Wish I’d Read in 2020

There are SO MANY I could choose for this blog post. I dealt with everything in 2020 by just buying all the books, so my physical TBR is now just a mess of stacks on the floor that seem to have taken on a life of their own. But here are six from those stacks that I really wish I’d got to last year.

1. Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann

I picked this book up last year after being recommended it by Hannah over @acupofwonderland and I am so excited to get to it! There’s not enough queer fiction about being ace-spec and this looks like it’ll be a great exploration of that.

2. The Castle of Tangled Magic by Sophie Anderson

I have read and loved all of Sophie Anderson’s books so far. She is an auto-buy author for me, and her books usually end up on my list for my book group as well - and they always go down a treat! The blend of magic and adventure, all with the sense that someone is reading you a story, is a real delight and one that I keep going back to.

3. Hollowpox by Jessica Townsend

The Nevermoor series is one of my favourite series in the last few years. The adventures of Morrigan Crow are everything I love in a fantasy adventure story, and the fact this series has so many instalments to come makes me so happy! This is a book I definitely want to get to soon, and will probably save for a stressful week when I need some escapism.

4. The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty

I have heard so much about this series, all of it amazing. I bought this last year, but didn’t get to it in the readathon I’d planned, as I’d already read a real tome in that same week and was feeling the fatigue! However, I think it’ll be one of the first fantasy tomes I reach for in 2021.

5. A Snowfall of Silver by Laura Wood

Laura Wood is another auto-buy author for me. In particular, her reworking of Much Ado (based on the epic Branagh-Thompson film!), Under A Dancing Star, is one of my all-time favourite books. This is a follow-up to her first book, A Sky Painted Gold, and I’m so excited to get back in to this world. I should get to this very soon, as I think I’ll want to read this while it still feels winter-y outside!

6. Dragon Mountain by Katie and Kevin Tsang

I love dragons. I love adventure. I cannot believe I did not read this book in 2020! (Spoiler: I have just started reading it now, and I already love it). I had several students shout about this book last term, so I can’t wait to finish reading it so I can discuss it with them!
