SFS: Magical Books

Honestly, the absolute audacity of Steph to give me a prompt where the thought of narrowing it down to six books makes me want to wail at my bookshelves! But here they are: six books that I think are magical.

I’ve decided to go with books that give me that wonderful nostalgic feeling about magic that books gave me when I was younger. That means there’s mostly throwbacks here, but ones that very much would be worth picking up. I’d love to know which of these you’ve read!

The Magician’s Guild series is based on a rogue girl magician trying to be brought under control and taken to the Guild for training: classic gangs and classist nonsense and magical school and found family. That’s somewhat similar to the Nevermoor books - Morrigan Crow is destined to die, before she is whisked off by the enigmatical Jupiter North to Nevermoor, where she has to try and gain a place at the Wundrous Society, which is a magical school… of sorts.

The Gift (the first in the Pellinor series) and Sabriel (the first in the Abhorsen series) are more quest-based; there is a sense of school and homeliness and comfort, but also of trekking long distances to find answers to questions and challenges that are like none they have faced so far. Both these series are ones I read when I was aged 11-13ish, and I really think they stand the test of time. Pellinor is also very LOTR-epic in style, but accessible for a younger audience, which I appreciated (I still have not finished LOTR…)

And finally, A Darker Shade of Magic has awesome magical worldbuilding, adventure, escapades, and all the things I love happening in a magical story; The Graveyard Book isn’t explicitly magic, with no magic system, but there is something about this world that is incredibly magical and I love it.

What magical books do you adore?
Any childhood faves?
